A year ago, Google’s global search market share was still above 92%, but today it has dropped to 89% — a noticeable decline. When Microsoft announced last year that its browser would be integrated with Copilot AI, my first thought was that the search engine Bing would begin reclaiming market share. My intuition was right.
Interestingly, all major search engines are showing growth, which indicates that users are beginning to abandon Google.
The U.S. government has also stepped in to support Google’s competitors
The U.S. Department of Justice has submitted a proposal to the court stating that Google should be required to sell its Chrome browser in order to restore competition in the search market. In addition to the sale of Chrome, the proposal demands that Google share its search results and data with competitors and end its exclusive agreements with Apple. These measures are part of a broader case aimed at dismantling Google’s illegal monopoly in the search and search‑advertising markets.
Google has criticized these proposals, arguing that they would harm consumers and businesses and threaten the United States’ economic and technological leadership. The trial is scheduled to begin in April, and a final decision is expected before the end of the workday.
